RESEARCH / video report /
It should now be possible to separate Frank Ocean’s new album from the eye-poppingly pretentious way in which it was released. There were months of false starts, then a cryptic video about the album’s construction which showed Ocean lathing away at mysterious lumps of wood. There followed a 45-minute visual album called Endless, and finally the real thing emerged – in a physical version which included a 360-page magazine featuring an interview with his mum, and as an iTunes-only download. Ocean thanks pretty much everyone in popular music from Bowie to the Beatles – but he neglects to say who’s doing what, or if they’re doing anything at all. Cue more online debate and wonderment.
Despite all this, Ocean has managed to preserve the musical personality that marked him out as special on 2012’s immersive, psychedelic R&B game-changer, Channel Orange. There is still the powerful sense of a veiled introvert, and of the unlikely intimacy he achieves within this pose. You find yourself caring anew about the “I” of these songs, who is reflected in snatches of impressionistic poetry, in sunlight, summer smoke and boxer shorts. Solo is the sweet, homoerotically charged.
.Seigfried captures a feeling of cosmic detachment: “I can’t relate to my peers/ I’d rather live outside/ I’d rather chip my pride than lose my mind out here.”
Blonde is a collection of quiet moments from the man who’s worked hard to make himself the most talked about thing on the internet. In his songs, Ocean is not in control. In fact, he is attractively lost.

BLONDE BY FRANK OCEAN
The reason why I chose to promote frank oceans new album blonde is because he was one of my favourite artists ever , not only that the album ‘’ blonde ‘’ has so much hype around it , it seemed inevitable to not promote this. I wanted to make the poster and the video look so realistic it almost seemed it was designed by frank ocean. I used many photos and videos on frank ocean to get an understanding on how he liked to design his stuff, I researched photos , the text of blond and other creators edits of music videos on frank ocean , here’s some research I done::: FILL IN.
My target audience was found via doing research. Most people said that it’s 18- 35 years olds who are heavily involved in social media and things like tumblr. Considering I am a tumblr user I knew exactly how to design my advertorial and poster. It had to seem alternative , different , unique and that’s always the vision of frank ocean. And I fully understood what his perception is.
The development of the magazine was hard. I didn’t want to seem like some ordinary magazine article that just criticised the artist and chewed them up and spit it out. Although frank is very minimalistic he always had another side to himself where it’s funky , colourful and eye catching. I wanted it seem bizarre but interesting. I read many articles about him and every writer wrote about him in a admiring way. So I did the same , considering you’re supposed to promote the album it’s self I had to make it seem like it was designed by people who frank knew well .
Creating the trailer took time , I really wanted to make it look realistic , the issue is that the blonde album was bizarre, not all audio was at the samed decibels, so people look at it thinking that the trailer was just out of tune but however it was just the way frank ocean prouduced the album , and because I wanted to make it realistic as possible , I had to include this. it sounded … weird. It’s an album that on first listen doesn’t necessarily sound like a classic – there are so many layers of vocals and instrumentation. The Guardian’s five-star album review at the time said it was one of the most “baffling, contrary and intriguing records put out by a major pop star – not just this year, but any year”.
Every sound effect had a meaning , because when I make my projects I personally believe that audio is one of the most important things to have when making a video. As I was teasing a new album I included some of the songs of the album , even from slowing it down and reverbing it so it sounded like it was like you was upstairs in a party and it’s being played downstairs. Audio is vital and I believe that I had a good use of sound effects.
Visually, I promised to make it colourful. I added in so many colours that it was like eye candy. The only issue is that I probably added in too many transitions in the video it’s self that sometimes from and outside viewer that doesn’t know much about frank ocean didn’t understand the ‘ hype ‘. I needed to bear in mind that you are not making it for you you are making it the viewers to buy. And unfortunately I didn’t follow that at all times.
Its magic was that it contained puzzles, both in its production and lyrical content – a lead vocal line that had been obscured would suddenly step forward from the shadows, three-quarters of the way through a song. As fans and critics gave it more of their time, a consensus began to emerge that it was Ocean’s greatest work. By December, Time, the Atlantic and Vulture had all declared it the record of the year. It’s hard to think of another record so rewarding to those willing to give it the time.
Whatever you may think about Blonde, it’s undeniably one of the most baffling, contrary and intriguing records put out by a major pop star – not just this year, but any year. Identifiable bangers of the kind Ocean has rattled off either for others or himself – most consistently on his 2011 mixtape Nostalgia Ultra – are conspicuous by their absence. The tone is muted and introspective, full of spectral guitar and lacking not just hefty beats but any kind of percussion at all. The lyrics are elliptical and fragmented, touching on adolescence and consumerism, identity and eroticism, yet lacking the sturdy narratives found on, say, Pyramids or Swim Good.

.
To evaluate, the radio broadcast sounds professional. its clear simple and . my main aim was to make it seem frank ocean dproduced it himself. personally i belived i succeded that aim. i got numerous amount of feedback and people like it. My main aim was to make sure it wasnt what i liked, but what the audience liked. to improve i belive i need probably more information. more in depth about frank ocean himself and about the album, considering i am promoting the album i need to talk about it more. Not only that the video is different , vibrant and theres lots of moods. however this is what franks album is and considering i only could make a 30 second video i had to fit it in.
