important information : Kings Lynn were given Mathew Hopkins, '' the best witchfinder  in the world''.

he charged 8 guineas. A price of 39 guineas might look like "about £39". In fact it is nearly £41. Prices in guineas were traditionally used for luxury goods.  So it was very expensive.

The fenland town of King’s Lynn has a long history, and unsurprisingly a few dark tales have been remembered and passed on through generations of townspeople over the years.  Once a thriving port and a member of the prestigious medieval Hanseatic League, King’s Lynn (known as Lynn to locals) retains many of its historic buildings.  One such building, an unassuming 17th Century cottage huddled close to the churchyard of St Nicholas’ chapel, is known as the “Exorcist’s house.”

In the medieval period, the role of an exorcist was an important one.  Illnesses, in particular many mental illnesses, that caused people to behave in strange or frightening ways were poorly understood and the sufferers were often thought to be possessed by demons.  In a number of passages in the Bible, Jesus is shown casting out demons and evil spirits that have possessed unfortunate people.

The Tuesday Marketplace in King’s Lynn (the town’s central market – now a rather large cobblestone car park bordered by the Corn Exchange and a variety of pubs and hotels) was, for many years, the scene of the public execution of ‘witches’. Having been accused (and found guilty) of witchcraft, Margaret Read was burned alive in Lynn’s Tuesday Marketplace in 1590. The legend (of which there are several versions) states that, whilst she was being consumed by the flames, Margaret’s heart spontaneously burst from her body and hit the wall of a house opposite – searing a permanent sign into the brickwork that can still be seen to this day. The heart is then said to have quite consciously “bounced” all the way out of town and into the River Ouse where it disappeared beneath the surface of the water in angry, sulphurous waves that recalled the bubbling of a cauldron!

LOCATION 3: DEVILS ALLEY

COORDINATES : 52°45'01.6"N 0°23'41.3"E

It is said that the devil’s hoof print is to be seen in Devil’s Alley off Nelson Street in Kings Lynn. The devil arrived by ship to the town, and disembarked to steal some souls, but he was spotted by a priest who drove him away with prayers and a dousing with holy water. The infuriated devil stamped his hoof with anger so hard that he left his imprint
